Expressed on the cell surface of B cells in the Pre B cell stage, absent on mature B cells, and reappears on plasma cells. Also found on the surface of malignant plasma cells and lymphoplsmocytoid cells. A selective and useful phenotypic marker for B cell lymphoblastic leukemia (B-CLL) and lymphoplasmocytoid lymphoma. The antigen is shed by myeloma cells entering into apoptosis thus it is a marker for viable myeloma cells.
