Can be used to distinguish subtypes of renal cell carcinomas, and aid in identification of metastatic renal cell carcinoma. It is expressed in about 85% of clear cell type, 98% of papillary/granular type, and extremely rare to absence in chromophobe type. There is no reported expression in renal oncocytomas. RCC is also expressed in mesotheliomas.
